Cutting Out Ultra-Processed Foods Changed My Life

This time two years ago, I had reached breaking point with my health and weight. I got married that year and had worked for over a year to lose weight for my wedding in May. It was a struggle and I've gone into detail on it here. However, by December 2022 I'd gained the weight back and I was baffled about how it happened. I felt starving all the time but I was also gaining weight rapidly, my eczema had come back, I had multiple food intolerances and I was bloated constantly. I felt completely shit about myself.


That brings us to January 2023...

I decided something had to change - and it couldn't be the same as the changes I implemented every January, after binge eating and drinking every December. I'd hit rock bottom and I really couldn't bear the thought of going through this again for the years to come. I was always into wellness and I loved listening to podcasts and I came across one featuring Dr Tim Spector - 'The Shocking New Truth About Weigh Loss, Calories and Diets'. This appealed to me, as I was seriously calorie restricting but I was gaining weight. In the podcast he talked about the gut microbiome and ultra-processed foods, two concepts I'd never heard of before, and it resonated with me so strongly. Could this be the answer to everything I was so frustrated about?


Taking action

I'm pretty committed when I decide I'm going to do something and I got obsessed with learning more about the gut and ultra-processed food. Within weeks I'd removed ultra-processed food from around 80% of my diet. The shift was almost immediate, I felt so full and energised, I was sleeping great and my bloating had decreased. I decided to work with a nutritionist to speed up the process of healing my gut which also helped my allergies, eczema and more.


What came next?

This has changed everything for me, since then I've:

  • Improved my relationship to food

  • Lost 10kg and gained muscle

  • Cleared my eczema

  • Studied to be an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach

  • Started my own business

  • Studied to become a Functional Health Coach (ongoing)

  • Improved my health and my husbands health

  • Helped my many clients to improve their health and continue the journey without me

  • Created my recipe guides

  • Grew my social media

  • Met amazing, inspiring people

  • Worked with brands I've admired and purchased from for years

  • Completely changed my outlook on what's important in life and what I value


My final thoughts

If you recognise yourself in 2022 me, know that it doesn't have to be this way. It's normalised in our society to binge every December and go into the new year feeling awful, and repeat this forever. You can break free from this cycle and next December look back and wonder why you haven't done this sooner.
